ANAS: Azerbaijan is the first in the South Caucasus in terms of the number of academic publications

ANAS: Azerbaijan is the first in the South Caucasus in terms of the number of academic publications

"In the last 5 years, the number of academic publications has increased by 80%, and among the countries of the South Caucasus, Azerbaijan has consistently ranked first every year since 2018."

This is stated in the statement posted on the official website of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).

Fakt Yoxla examined whether this claim was true.

This statement was published a day after President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on renaming the Ministry of Education as the Ministry of Science and Education and transferring up to 37 institutes and scientific institutions from ANAS to the Ministry.

According to the SCIMAGO platform, which includes indicators related to academic publications, Georgia, not Azerbaijan, is the leader in the number of academic publications in the South Caucasus. So, in 2021, 1,829 scientific publications were recorded in Azerbaijan, 2,028 in Georgia, and 1,243 in Armenia.

In the last five years, the number of scientific resources of this type in Azerbaijan has increased by 55 percent, not 80 percent.

At the end of 2021, the number of academic publications per 100,000 people in Georgia was 54, in Armenia - 42, and in Azerbaijan - 18. Thus, in the last five years, Georgia ranked first in the South Caucasus in terms of both the total and per capita number of scientific publications, and Azerbaijan ranked last in terms of per capita number of scientific publications.

Fakt Yoxla concludes that the statement of ANAS is False.
