Does the US and the West want the war in Ukraine to last for years?

"The United States and the West are reluctant to take any serious steps to end the war in Ukraine. On the contrary, all the steps taken by the United States and the West are aimed at prolonging the war in Ukraine as much as possible, even for years. It is clear that Western political circles are currently not thinking about ending the war in Ukraine".

This claim was written by Elchin Khalidbeyli, a political expert of the Yeni Musavat Media Group, in an article published on musavat.com.

Fakt Yoxla examined whether this claim was true.

Throughout his political career, US President Joe Biden's position on wars has been controversial. When Biden was a senator, although he voted for the United States to start wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, he later supported the withdrawal of troops from those countries, including Vietnam, and the cessation of hostilities.

However, Biden has made diplomatic efforts from the beginning to prevent Russia's intervention in Ukraine.

Before Russia's military intervention in Ukraine on February 18, he said he was convinced that Vladimir Putin had decided to occupy Ukraine but stressed that they were ready for diplomatic talks.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also said on February 18 that the United States would seek a diplomatic solution until the last minute, even if it was not possible.

On March 7, Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson once again called on Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine via video conference.

Spokesman of the German Government, Steffen Hebestreit, said after the meeting that the leaders agreed: "The protection of civilians must be a priority, Russia must immediately end its illegal attacks on Ukraine and withdraw its troops completely".

Hebestreit also noted that the leaders continue to support diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.

French President Emmanuel Macron has made numerous efforts to end the conflict. Stating that they are working to resolve the conflict diplomatically, Macron stressed the importance of declaring a ceasefire and ending the war.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, said that the duration of the war in Ukraine depends on the President of Russia: "Putin must stop the violence and allow peace talks. He made a catastrophic mistake and must withdraw. He must stop killing innocent people in Ukraine."

President of the European Council, Charles Michel, also called for a ceasefire. Stating that the anti-war coalition has grown, Michel said: "Russia, stop the war. Go home. Let’s talk."

NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg called on Russia for a diplomatic solution and said: ”We call on President Putin to stop this war immediately. Withdraw all his forces from Ukraine without conditions. And engage in genuine diplomacy, now.”

Meanwhile, Turkey has made various diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. The European Commission praised Turkey's diplomatic efforts.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said, "We will not stop until the operation in Ukraine is successful."

Fakt Yoxla concludes that Elchin Khalidbeyli's claim is Anti-Western Propaganda.

P.S. Since the article of musavat.com was published on April 11, the claim was examined on the basis of information up to that date.
