Trend's claim about Shah Deniz field

"Once production at the Shah Deniz gas condensate field reaches its peak, Enough natural gas will be supplied to meet the needs of each of the countries along the Southern Gas Corridor more than twice." This is stated in a news published by Trend News Agency.

Fakt Yoxla examined whether the agency's claim was true.

Trend News Agency reported this with reference to BP. The company said in a statement: “When Shah Deniz reaches its peak production, it will provide enough new natural gas to meet the needs of every capital city along the Southern Corridor - more than twice over.” Thus, BP's statement refers to the capitals of the countries along the corridor, not to the countries along the corridor.

The Ministry of Energy said in a statement on the Southern Gas Corridor that the aim of the project is to develop the second phase of the Shah Deniz gas condensate field, which will initially export natural gas to Turkey and Southern Europe via the expanded South Caucasus Gas Pipeline, TANAP, and TAP.

The official website of the Southern Gas Corridor project states that Shah Deniz-2 (SD2) is one of the largest and most complex gas projects in the world and the first underwater infrastructure in the Caspian Sea. The SD2 project will add 16 billion cubic meters of gas to the 10.9 billion cubic meters of gas produced annually under the SD1 project. Thus, the annual production of these projects will reach 26.9 billion cubic meters.

The countries along the Southern Gas Corridor are Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, and Italy.

The annual demand for natural gas by the countries along the Southern Gas Corridor is 138 billion cubic meters. When production at the Shah Deniz field reaches its peak, it will be possible to transport about 27 billion cubic meters of natural gas through this corridor. This is five times lower than the annual gas demand of the countries along the corridor.

Annual demand for gas in the countries along the Southern Gas Corridor

Countries (billion cubic meters)
Italy 70.8
Turkey 43.2
Azerbaijan 11.8
Greece 5.1
Bulgaria 3.3
Georgia 2.5
Albania 1.76
Total 138.46

Thus, BP did not disclose the information that the Shah Deniz field would provide enough natural gas to meet the needs of countries along the Southern Gas Corridor more than twice.

Fakt Yoxla concludes that the news published by Trend is Fake News.
